IUCN Director General honoured by France
Gland, Switzerland, 20 February, 2008 (IUCN) – IUCN Director General Julia Marton-Lefèvre was awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre national de la Légion d’Honneur distinction by the French Government on February 1, in recognition of the many years she has spent working for the environment.
During her long and distinguished career, Julia Marton-Lefèvre has directed many prestigious organizations, including the University for Peace (UPEACE), Leadership for Environment and Development (LEAD) and the International Council for Science (ICSU). She has also worked for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
Her involvement with science, peace and sustainable development is an integral part of her daily work at IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature), the largest international environment organization in the world.
“I am convinced that by awarding me the Légion d’Honneur, the French Government wants to honour all the men and women who work every day to protect the environment,” said Julia Marton-Lefèvre. “I’ve always been lucky enough to work with people from all over the world who share the same passion. Whether they work in environmental organizations, universities, businesses or civil society, I would like them all to feel that this award is for them.”
